The Harry Middleton Gift

“A story of adventure, fortune and generosity”

Introduction to The Harry Middleton Gift

The Harry Middleton Gift holds a remarkable tale that intertwines adventure, fortune, and generosity. Born in 1883 in Newport Pagnell, Mr. Harry Middleton embarked on an extraordinary journey that would shape the future of his hometown. While his early life remains shrouded in mystery, his legacy is one of profound impact.

As a young boy, Harry worked in Taylors, a local establishment, before eventually setting his sights on Canada. Legend has it that his decision to emigrate in 1912 was prompted by a game of chance called “pitch and toss” that he played with friends on Bury Fields. Fearing the consequences of this illegal activity, he sought refuge overseas.

In Canada, Harry found work as a miner and a trapper. His money was invested in land, which was later purchased by the Mining Corporation of Canada and Noranda Mines. Harry was given shares in both companies, and it was these shares he gave to Newport Pagnell in 1956. He even found love in Canada, marrying a woman named Isabel. They moved back to the UK and lived in London, where after Isabel’s passing in 1953, he remained in the UK until he died in 1966.

During his later life, Harry found solace in Newport Pagnell once again, lodging with the Finlayson family on Wolverton Road. Despite physical limitations later in life, he became a familiar figure, often seen being pushed through the town in a wheelchair. It was here, in the heart of the community that he had once called home, that his remarkable story would find its ultimate chapter.

On January 17, 1966, Harry Middleton passed away at Renny Lodge Hospital in Newport Pagnell, leaving behind a legacy that would forever shape the town’s future. The local community mourned his loss.

Today, The Harry Middleton Gift stands as a testament to his enduring impact on Newport Pagnell. Let us delve deeper into the origins of this remarkable gift and how it continues to benefit the local community to this day.

The Gift and its Impact

The Harry Middleton Gift originated from a remarkable act of generosity by Harry Middleton himself. It all began in 1956 with his anonymous visit to the Newport Pagnell Urban District Council (UDC) offices, where he expressed a keen interest in supporting the construction of a swimming pool for the town, as he was a keen swimmer. Inspired by his vision, Harry took the initiative to contribute his Canadian shares as the initial donation towards realising this ambitious project.

Recognising the need for immediate funds, Harry later made a substantial cash donation, enabling the swift construction of the swimming pool. Thanks to his remarkable gift, the pool became a reality within a remarkable eight-month timeframe. This rapid completion stands as a testament to Harry’s commitment and the profound impact of his gift on the community.

The Harry Middleton Gift continues to leave a lasting legacy, supporting various initiatives that enhance the lives of Newport Pagnell residents.
